I love stories about witches coming into their own power and I love stories about sisters。 So, this book was perfect for me。。 This book was a bit of a surprise, mostly good。 I wasn't expecting it to be spooky and creepy, but I'm glad it was。 It made it even more enjoyable。I liked the sisterly connection and the growth in their relationship。 I could relate to this part of the story。 I don't have a twin but I do have a sister。 Our connection is very strong even if we have rough patches along the w I love stories about witches coming into their own power and I love stories about sisters。 So, this book was perfect for me。。 This book was a bit of a surprise, mostly good。 I wasn't expecting it to be spooky and creepy, but I'm glad it was。 It made it even more enjoyable。I liked the sisterly connection and the growth in their relationship。 I could relate to this part of the story。 I don't have a twin but I do have a sister。 Our connection is very strong even if we have rough patches along the way。 We are always stronger when we're together。 I feel like Hunter and Mercy are the same deep down。There are some very scary aspects and some very difficult themes。 I do think these are written well and have meaning within the story。 When the first monster appears in their town, all hell breaks loose。 The murders are gruesome and the descriptions are vivid。 I was a little creeped out but not enough to stop reading。If there is one complaint, it is the steamy scene。 I feel it goes beyond what this age group is ready for。 YA includes 12 year olds。 My grandson is 12 and is in no way ready for any of the descriptions that this particular scene had。 This needs to be listed as Upper YA, and even then goes too far, in my opinion。 It made me cringe because these are 16 year old kids we're reading about。 The story would have been just as good without everything that happened in that particular scene。I thoroughly enjoyed this book and gave it 4 stars。 There is so much to love about it, I can't wait for the next installment。I was gifted and e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review。 Thank you to the authors and NetGalley! 。。。more

Unfortunately, I had some cons that kept popping up in the middle of my enjoyment。My drawback surrounds a few things。 The characters read younger than their age。 Yes, I know this is YA。 Yes, I know I am an adult, and I may be slightly out of touch with the persona of the young and wild… but I really did feel like I was reading about middle grade characters a lot more than expected。 The sex scene stopped me in my tracks too。 I love a good smutty read but this felt thrown in; honestly, the whole relationship aspect between Mercy and her boyfriend, Kirk, could have been left out。 The multiple-orgasm chat between daughter and mom (among other things), the over the top and unrealistic police portions and the way characters discuss the deceased just made me cringe a bit。 With that noted I do think the idea of the plot was captivating。 The epilogue really set the stage and though it veers drastically from that starting point the authors made the mythological cyclops and underworld portions pretty entertaining。 I adored the unique takes on different mythological elements and even found a soft spot for some of the not-so-great characters at points。 These aspects lifted the novel back up for me。 It truly was a rollercoaster of ups and downs。 Speaking of ups and downs I also had the opportunity to listen to the ALC (read by Cassandra Campbell) when I couldn’t read the ARC。 I did enjoy the audio, though I would’ve liked a little more differentiation between voices for some of the female characters。 I do think Hunter was captured well overall and let’s be honest, she is kind of a fave right now。 I am leaning more towards the physical act of reading overall。 The narration took a little away with lack of inflection and sometimes emotion。 Another up and down area for me。 Knowing me, I plan to read the next book。 The ending left me with tons of ideas on where this will go next and kind of hoping for a darker turn with more Hunter focus and less Mercy。 This is a fast paced and easy to read YA fantasy novel。 There is explicit sexual content not suitable for the younger side of this genre。 Thank you to Macmillan audio and Wednesday Books for the ability to fully immerse myself in the gifted audio and physical copies。 All aside, I am looking forward to what happens next。 I think our duo has more instore for their readers。 。。。more

I connected with her so much and loved that she was gay。 I also loved how she tries so much to be strong for her sister and even if she doesn't show it a lot, is grieving! ❤️❤️MercyI dislike her very much。 Mercy is not very good to her sister。 As much as she loves her sister Hunter is usually the one always looking out for her, Mercy does nothing in return! She didn't even acknowledge that Hunter was probably grieving in her own way, she let Hunter take away all the pain for her but she did nothing to help her in return! Instead, she goes ahead and tells her how her god is causing all this trouble and reflects all that negativity on Hunter's sexuality!!! The ending of this book made me dislike Mercy even more。 She's just so selfish and self-indulgent!JaxI love how he was so supportive of Hunter and cared for so much! I truly believe that in all this chaos and all the things that are going on he was more of a friend than her own sister ever was。 We just need more strong friendships with no romance, you know? And he really made that happen! But I still can't shake the feeling that he might like her? Maybe it's all the your-best-friend-loves-you trope's I've read so much about in almost every book (the hunger games, city of bones, e。t。c) EmilyShe was an awesome friend and I loved how she took care of her family and loved them so very much but was also there for her friends。 Even when she was also going through the death of her own father she really did it come out as a strong loving character :) OverallI had a really high expectations going into this because I love witches and Salem, and if you're going to name a book series The Sisters of Salem you better make sure that book is good! Thankfully this book was really fun and enjoyable and I loved it。 Even though my expectations were off the roof this was a really enjoyable read。 I loved the LGBTQ aspect of this book and how it all came together with the grief and mystery。 This book was really one of wide genres and I loved that it also contained Greek / Roman mythology and connected to the witches to it! So I really loved the overall World building and the characters (not Mercy) I also really enjoyed that this book showed me side of the villain as well, even as I was disgusted by what he was doing I really enjoyed him。 Let's be honest, who doesn't love a bad guy with a sad backstory?

With the world building in place and the twins becoming women, the series still shows some promise。 Cassandra Campbell does a fine job of narration, distinguishing the characters with subtlety, helping build suspense, and moving the plot steadily forward。 。。。more

This pains me as I love books about witches。 The synopsis is so promising。 I thought I was going to love this book。 Instead, what I loved was the prologue。 I would give the prologue 5 stars if I could。 I thought it was brilliant。 I wanted more of it。 I wanted to know what happened to Sarah Goode and her daughter。 I was instantly drawn in and captivated by her plight。 But the book was not about Sarah Goode but her descendants - Hunter and Mercy Goode。Hunter and Mercy are twin witches who are lear This pains me as I love books about witches。 The synopsis is so promising。 I thought I was going to love this book。 Instead, what I loved was the prologue。 I would give the prologue 5 stars if I could。 I thought it was brilliant。 I wanted more of it。 I wanted to know what happened to Sarah Goode and her daughter。 I was instantly drawn in and captivated by her plight。 But the book was not about Sarah Goode but her descendants - Hunter and Mercy Goode。Hunter and Mercy are twin witches who are learning what it means to be a gatekeeper to different underworlds and portals。 Still with me? When their mother is murdered, it is only the beginning。 But unlike the beginning of this book, their story did not shine。 While I loved the writing in the prologue, I was not a fan of it here。 This just did not work for me。 It held my interest enough to keep me reading, but unfortunately it was not the book for me。 I kept wondering the entire book, how could this book have such a strong prologue to then lose its way? I highlighted many sections but here is one where I just thought seriously:"Yes, your mother。 We loved her。 She was a, uh, a woman。"Now, keep in mind, I am not giving the scene or backstory on who said this but even as a teen, if someone would have said this to me, I might have said "Are you kidding me?" P。C。 and Kristin Cast wrote one of my favorite series ever, House of Night。 When I saw they were releasing a new fantasy series I knew I had to read it。 With that said, I was hoping to love this one more than I actually did。 It's also quite possible that I didn't enjoy this one as much since I'm not part of the target audience。 Hunter and Mercy are polar opposite 16 year old twin witches that are faced with the task of saving the town after a ritual goes wrong。 The biggest issue I had with this P。C。 and Kristin Cast wrote one of my favorite series ever, House of Night。 When I saw they were releasing a new fantasy series I knew I had to read it。 With that said, I was hoping to love this one more than I actually did。 It's also quite possible that I didn't enjoy this one as much since I'm not part of the target audience。 Hunter and Mercy are polar opposite 16 year old twin witches that are faced with the task of saving the town after a ritual goes wrong。 The biggest issue I had with this novel, was that it was perceived that a character's sexuality is what led her to choose a god or goddess outside of the norm that ultimately caused the deaths of innocent people and put the entire town at risk。 I felt like this gave a negative feel to the last half of the book。 Why was it relevant for Hunter's sexuality to even be brought up at that time? Why was it so hard for Mercy to believe that Hunter chose to worship the God solely because that's who she felt drawn the most to? I felt like this situation alone, albeit small, can unnecessarily negatively impact the readers who are also struggling with their sexuality。 I also really didn't understand why Mercy's boyfriend all of a sudden completely flipped out on the girls toward the end。 It seemed really out of character than from his other appearances。 In regards to the narration, I feel like Cassandra Campbell may not have been the best fit。 I've listened to several books narrated by her and she always does a wonderful job。 This however was a YA novel with 16 year old main characters and I don't think her voice quite fit。Trying to end on a positive note, I really liked that this book was about witches rather than the normal YA paranormal and the overall premise was great。 There was an explicit scene that would keep me from recommending this book to younger teens but other than that, I would have really enjoyed this book as a high schooler。 I know what powerful magic PC & Kristin Cast can create with their novels and am really looking forward to reading more in this series。 Thank you, Macmillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this novel。•Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️(3)/5 。。。more

Sarah is SO smart and cool that she is able to shut the gates and build a utopia or whatever, and even the Indigenous peoples decide it's safe to live there now。 There's an attempt by the authors/characters to recognize Native wise women later in the book, but it reads like token representation when the white main cast still runs around at the center of everything, and the story is ultimately about their heroics and cleverness, etc。 Plus, it's a bad look when they actually high-five each other for having the most basic thought about it。 Let's assume you're already appalled。 But we've got to keep digging that hole because the 5 gates to the underworld represent different pantheons: Norse, Greek, Egyptian, Japanese, and Hindu。 So I guess now this is the part where we appropriate from living religions to make our magic seem fun and cool and global? Aka colonialism part II。Yeah, so。。。 would not recommend。 。。。more
